Course Title - RECORD KEEPING
Good quality recording is essential when working with Children and Young People. This is an opportunity for carers to learn how to write professional, concise reports and what information needs to be recorded. The records written by carers will stay with the child/young person throughout their time in care. The course will explore the agencies expectations and the purpose of the new ‘placement file’.

Course Title – EQUALITY & DIVERSITY
Children & young people placed in care come from many different Local Authorities and cultures and have a wide range of backgrounds. Carers will explore the stereotyping of particular groups and sections of the community regardless of race, disability, sexuality or gender. The course will look at carers own attitudes and will explore what is meant by an equal opportunities perspective. It will enable carers to have an awareness of individual differences and the impact of this on children & young people.

Course Title – BASIC FIRST AID
It is extremely important knowing what to do if a child is in need of emergency first aid. This course is valuable for carers and their families, and offers practical help in times of emergency. The course covers basic life saving first aid, including what to do in an emergency, cardi-pulmonary resuscitation, first aid for the unconscious, casualty and first aid for the wounding and bleeding. The trainers use a number of teaching methods including practical work, group work and presentations to enable delegates to learn core skills and knowledge in case of any first aid emergency they are faced with in the future.

Course Title – EDUCATION OF LOOKED AFTER CHILDREN
Recent reports suggest that the educational achievement of Looked After Children is below average. This course will provide a good understanding of the educational system and strategies for carers to engage with schools to enable children to reach their maximum potential.

Introduction
Looked After Children can present a range of complex behaviours, such as non-compliance, aggression, hyper-activity or lack of concentration. These are some of the challenges that carers may face on a daily basis. This one day training course will give carers more understanding and introduce a range of strategies to manage the impact of such behaviour and ways of promoting children’s self esteem. This course aims to provide carers with a tool kit of skills and techniques when working with children and to develop confidence when managing challenging behaviour.
· Have an increased understanding of why a young person exhibits challenging behaviour.
· Explored different ways of managing difficult behaviour.
· Have developed assertion skills and considered how to apply them when working with challenging young people.
· Have explored possible indicators of both high and low self-esteem.
This workshop enables participants to explore their understanding and experience of adult/child communication by using verbal and other creative techniques such as play, art, sand play, story telling (narratives) and active listening. This workshop will encourage carers/support workers to engage and participate using various play therapies, providing a ‘creative box’ as an additional tool in their work with children.
· Be aware of a child’s development chronologically and via development play.
· Be aware of children’s spatial, body and verbal language and how to adapt accordingly.
· Gain a depth and understanding of creative techniques with an introduction to play and story making.
· Learn how to enhance a child’s communication through creativity and play.

Course Title – ATTACHMENT (Including Contacts)
This workshop will be of particular interest to carers with children placed long term. Parenting children with attachment difficulties can present many challenges, due to their inability to form trusting relationships. The course will look at different kinds of attachment disorder and their consequent effects on their development and behaviour. We will then give carers the opportunity to examine different techniques for working with children who have experienced early trauma in their lives.
Children’s contact with their family is an integral part of the carers work. The course will focus on why contact is so important in maintaining a child’s sense of self.
· Carers will have an understanding of how early gaps in parenting can affect a child’s ability to form trusting relationships.
· Carers will have explored how abuse, neglect and loss can affect a child’s development.
· Have an increased awareness of how poor attachment can impact on a child’s brain development.
· Learn how to work with children and their families in a positive way.

Course Title – ATTACHMENT & LOSS (Including Endings)
Attachment Theory is recognised as an important way of working with children and young people who have suffered early loss or trauma, and how it relates to the children in your care. This course will enable participants to explore in greater depth how loss can affect children in care, and will help carers put into practice some new initiatives and techniques. The course will look at some of the work by leading therapists in this field and consider how we can use their ideas when working with looked after children.
The course will look at how endings can have a significant affect on looked after children and their carers and explore ways of making the experience as positive as possible.

· Carers will have had the opportunity to share with others their techniques of working with children with significant attachment & loss difficulties.
